Two Arkansas Women Die in Semi-Truck Head-on Collision

October 10, 2023 Firm News

Two Kirby women died in a head-on collision with a semi-truck in early October. The crash happened on Arkansas Highway 27 near its intersection with Cowhide Cove in rural Pike County.

According to an Arkansas State Police preliminary fatal crash summary, Ashley Penrod, 31, was driving a 2020 Ford Explorer southbound when she was hit by a northbound 2014 Freightliner driven by an unnamed driver.

Penrod was negotiating an uphill slope and a right curve when the Freightliner driver, who was traveling downhill in a left curve, lost control and began to spin counterclockwise. The Freightliner crossed into the SUV’s lane, and Penrod swerved to avoid a collision, but the front passenger side of the semi struck the front driver side of the SUV.

Penrod and an 87-year-old passenger, Verna Moore, also of Kirby, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The Freightliner driver was not injured. The collision happened at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2023, under cloudy skies and on a wet roadway, according to investigating Trooper Tate Ledbetter.
