Tractor Trailer Crashes into Van in Fatal Illinois Crash

An investigation is underway in DeKalb County, Illinois after a collision between a semi-truck and a delivery van in late August left one man dead. First responders were dispatched to Plank and Lukens roads in Sycamore township. Both vehicles had veered off the road into a ditch, according to available information.

The delivery van’s driver was found dead, while the semi-truck driver was unharmed, according to available information. Authorities identified the individuals involved: Blake Mathison, 59, from Sycamore, was driving westbound on Plank Road when his van was hit head-on by a semi-truck driven by 27-year-old Hector Vela from Elgin.

Vela had swerved into the westbound lane to avoid stopped vehicles at the intersection. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch, according to available information. Mathison was found dead at the scene. Vela underwent a drug and alcohol screening, with pending results.
